#EMTM is... sharing knowledge and building networks! It’s that time of the year again where different cohorts of EMTMers come together to share their knowledge and experiences gathered throughout and after the program. Today, we had Mr. Baumgarten from WTTC as a guest speaker with us at the Alumni and Industry day where he shared his thoughts about the Travel and Tourism industry. It was an amazing day of sharing ideas and hopes for the future! #emtmlife #erasmus #erasmusmundus #travelandtourism #tourism
#TheEMTMsummer is almost over, and here are some thoughts from Cristiana at the end of the season about her summer work experience. "Greetings from sunny and hot Adriatic Coast, Italy! ☀️ This summer has been quite intense for me, I have been working in a 5 star hotel in Milano Marittima, a nice seaside town full of energy during the summer. The Resort I have been working in is one of the oldest and most famous in this part of the Riviera, where history and traditions meet modern design and outstanding service. Working in the Reservation department means taking care of the customers from the beginning of their travel experience and at the same time constantly cooperating with other departments of the Hotel. 🤝 Some days have been particularly challenging but I have been able to gain deeper knowledge in terms of sales techniques, revenue management, customer care and...a lot of time management! ✔ This experience also allowed me to discover how tourism has developed here, the great hospitality of the people of Romagna, their great food and during my free time the laidback life by the beach (which I honestly love!) 🌊 Now I am really excited to start the last semester with my #EMTMfamily in Girona!" 🇪🇸 #EMTM #EMTMlife #EMTM1820 #Erasmus #ErasmusMundus #tourism #Italy #hospitality #emiliaromagna #riviera #summerseason
In this #TheEMTMsummer series, we have Dingman sharing her summer internship experience with us all the way from China. “This summer, I did an internship under the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, which is an official tourism board that belongs to the Chinese government in Guangzhou. During the two months of internship, I had four basic roles: 1) To assist government officials with their projects on tourism development and cultural relics protection within the Guangdong province; 2) To deal with daily chores such as checking official stamps on documents; 3) Drafting and posting projects' main ideas online to the public; 4) Going on field trips in order to gather more information regarding the different projects. I enjoyed my time with the department because I was able to gain first-hand tourism related information from the officials, and I was also able to better understand the separate functions in the country's system.” #EMTM #EMTMlife #EMTM1820 #Erasmus #ErasmusMundus #Guangdong #Guangzhou #China #culture #tourism #tourismboard
It’s Generation 2017-19 with #EMTMthesisdiary from Stefania✨ ⠀ "For my last EMTM semester my intention was to write my thesis while also gaining some professional experience. After some considerations, I finally decided to spent my last semester in ROMA! ⠀ I visited Rome already in the past, but live there it’s definitely different. I must say that time management was the greatest challenge when attempting to combine a master thesis with a job but eventually it makes you feel better and rewarding! ⠀ My thesis is about green mobility in european destinations and I loved my master thesis topic so much that I will continue to raise awareness on the importance of sustainable mobility as the key to enhance the quality of life. ⠀ Live in Rome gave me the chance to have a break from both work and thesis by walking through the imperial forum and coliseum or the Trastevere. ⠀ The amazing thing about EMTM is that when you are stressed about your thesis or you think to have lost your inspiration, you have 34 people ready to cheer you up!! ⠀ I wish I could continue to dedicate my career to sustainable mobility in the tourism industry!"
About 10 days from now, Generation 2018-2020 will meet again to prepare for their third semester in Girona. With #TheEMTMsummer coming to an end, Alice takes this opportunity to share her internship experience with us: “Ciao a tutti! I’m an Italian EMTM student previously graduated at the University of Grastronomic Sciences - Pollenzo. I have just finished my internship experience in the Office of Osteria Francescana, a three starred Michelin restaurant in Modena- Italy. I have focused mainly on the new hospitality project signed by Chef Massimo Bottura, Casa Maria Luigia, in particular I was part of the customer care and reservation team for the dinner experience, Francescana at Maria Luigia. There, an Osteria Francescana experience is offered in a convivial and informal atmosphere. Guests are seated in commonal tables where they have the chance to meet each other coming from all over the world and the open kitchen create a connection between guests and the Francescana at Maria Luigia team.” #EMTM #EMTMlife #EMTM1820 #Erasmus #ErasmusMundus #gastronomy #Modena #Italy #Italian #michelinstar #restaurant
Hey 👋🏽 @nanakathrine here again! This time sharing my #EMTMthesisdiary 📝 ⠀ I was one of those (probably only 😆) who started my thesis introduction with the f… word - so why not just do it again 😂 it sets off the story quite well: “Life as a digital nomad is not all sun, sex, and sangria. This might come as a surprise - but at times - it can be really fucking hard. And failing to acknowledge this will make it harder. [...] Awareness is a beautiful thing. Heightened expectations are not. The lifestyle of a ‘digital nomad’ is not that of a fucking Unicorn!” (Cullen, 2018, ll. 27–43) ⠀ Well.. so: A surprise? 😱 Maybe not for you! 🤓 But if looking at popular medias representations of digital nomads this reality is rarely exposed 🤔 ⠀ I’ve gotten it A LOT as well as ‘Nana your life is like a fairytale!👸All those countries you get to see; all those amazing experiences…’ and hey, don’t misunderstand me life IS great and adventurous… BUT it is also very challenging at times, very lonely (despite being surrounded by tons of great people) and it changes you so much that you’ll sometimes find it hard to come back to or feel part of something greater🤕 So, thats exactly what I decided to explore from an academic point of view, and so I spent the last half a year researching digital nomadism under the title ’DIGITAL NOMADISM – A GATEWAY TO FREEDOM OR A UTOPIA? AN EXPLORATION OF DIGITAL NOMADS PERCEIVED LIFESTYLE IN THE LIGHT OF OUTER REPRESENTATIONS’ ❤️🗺💔 and the findings .. IN-TER-EST-ING 😃 (Total geek alarm, but wanna learn more? Then DM me with your email and I’ll send you a free copy of my thesis 😉) ⠀ On a personal note too I’ve, in best digital nomad style, been running my business @Speaktourism🚀and I just wanna note finally that for all of you (wow congrats for reading so far 🤓) who may wonder where you end up, or if tourism is your thing - a thing never to forget is how these competencies that you developed can be used directly or indirectly in a tourism context! Me e.g. I am doing social media for a wide range of businesses, and some of the most successful ones are not tourism businesses 🤔 ... continue reading in the comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️
#EMTMThesisDiary from Arina @arishatromso ⠀ I have spent the fourth semester in Girona, enjoying Catalan culture, amazing landscapes and the company of other EMTMers who stayed there. ⠀ I was excited to make a research on wellness retreats in Catalonia, as it’s a perfect destination for such kind of tourism. The focus of the research is the positioning challenges of the retreat sector, so I decided to arrange face-to-face interviews with the retreat operators in the area to learn about their perspective. ⠀ The data collection was the most fascinating part of the research: speaking with practitioners, comparing different perspectives and getting lots of insights about retreats! I was surprised how easy it was to contact them and arrange meetings in Girona and Barcelona. ⠀ In my free time I explored little towns of Girona province, immersed into the Catalan culture, made new friendships and practiced Spanish. ⠀ This semester has been challenging and very different to the past three ones. I miss my EMTM family very much. Now that the Thesis is submitted, we are preparing for the graduation and looking forward to see each other again in Girona!
#EMTMThesisDiary from James, EMTM 2017-19 ⠀ I have spent the past semester at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, writing my thesis on the touristic potential of wildlife rehabilitation centres, using the BC Wildlife Park as a case study. 🇨🇦 ⠀ In particular, the research focuses on tourists’ motivations and perceptions of such centres. ⠀ I stayed with a host family and was able to immerse myself in Canadian culture. I was able to try out some new sports, which are popular in Canada and even got the opportunity to do some curling. ⠀ In my free time, I went on numerous trips with the Leisure Exploration Activity Program (LEAP), including to nearby provincial parks and lakes. It was inspiring visiting areas of unspoilt and pristine wilderness. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time surrounded by nature and it really highlighted the need to protect these remaining natural spaces and the species that live within them, especially given how quickly such areas are being destroyed around the world. ⠀ I hope to dedicate my career to fulfilling this ambition and contributing to conservation activities through tourism and facilitating a more sustainable tourism industry 🌳🌎
In this #TheEMTMsummer series, Gabrielle shares her experience all the way from New Zealand: “Kia Ora! Greetings from Wellington, the southernmost capital city in the World. I am spending my summer in this beautiful place as an intern for WINTA, the World Indigenous Tourism Alliance. Through this opportunity, I am gaining knowledge about human rights and more specifically indigenous rights, and how to make sure they are respected in the tourism industry. This includes reviewing past declarations and aligning them together to create new policies or influence governments. I am also attending various meetings with tourism stakeholders and developing interpersonal skills, and met two other interns with different cultural backgrounds. Wellington is also a fantastic place to learn more about Māori culture and knowledge, for instance by visiting Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum. One of my other tasks to look into the potential of the organization of an indigenous tourism conference in Europe, as there is a growing demand for this niche tourism, and indigenous knowledge can be applied in other global issues, such as climate change. I believe that this internship gives me new insights on how to apply sustainable tourism, and I hope that this post will show everyone that the tourism industry is not only about working in hotels or being a tour operator, but it also includes other dimensions such as heritage and culture conservation as well as a human rights perspective.”
#EMTMThesisDiary of Aina @ainaapubill 😍Hello from Arizona, the Grand Canyon State and the home of 22 Native American tribes! ⠀ I decided to spend the fourth semester of my EMTM journey in this amazing state full of breathtaking landscapes and stunning nature, where I am writing my thesis on the representations of Native Americans for tourism purposes. ⠀ This unique opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge on indigenous tourism and learn a lot about Native American history and culture and also meet members from the communities. It has been great to experience campus life at an American university and travel to wonderful places. ⠀ I’m so grateful for this experience and I could not be happier with my choice! Arizona is a gem 💎🌵🌞🏜
Applying both the knowledge of sustainability and tourism in his internship, Fekadu shares with us #TheEMTMsummer experience: “Hello everyone! As part of the EMTM program I am doing an internship at Sustainable Hospitality Development (SHD) Ltd., a company that specializes in managing and developing sustainable hospitality brands. The company manages an award winning ECO friendly hotel (Bohinj ECO Hotel) and is about to open a new riverside boutique hotel (named Sunrose 7 Boutique Hideaway) in Bohinjska Bistrica, Slovenia. As an intern, I am working on pre-opening marketing tasks for the new hotel which includes creating content for the new hotel’s website, preparing sales materials and developing pre-opening marketing campaign strategy. I am also helping in the preparation of documents needed to certify the new hotel with ECO labels and certificates. The internship has helped me gain a hands-on experience in tourism marketing, sustainable tourism product development and hospitality management. Hello from Canada-eh! ⠀ Get ready for @iris.k.elias story! ⠀ 1️⃣ I am studying a phenomenon that is quite new, different and liberal! ⠀ 2️⃣ I also want to make my story about raising mental health awareness. It is a part of it all, for better and for worse, and we should acknowledge that. ⠀ If you have written a thesis, are writing a thesis right now or is about to write one, you know that the hardest part is not that you have to write a large academic paper. It might be that your motivation fluctuates all the time, that you frequently ask yourself why you are even doing this and what the purpose is. ⠀ The thesis is not as magnificent as you wanted it to be. It has flaws. You consider quitting, and some days you even stop believing in yourself. In the thesis life, these thoughts are normal. Mental health issues are common. The truth is that thesis-life is tremendously liberal and cool at times, but it is also tough. ⠀ I don't know if it has to be like that, but I do know something else... it helps to talk about it and to know that it happens to many of us. It helps to Skype your EMTM family to overcome it together. It helps to have distractions, which for me is spending time in the outdoors. I have balanced thesis writing with rock-climbing, hiking, camping, and sea-kayaking. ⠀ To my extended EMTM family, friends and others: Do things that make you happy! ⠀ ALSO, what helps is choosing a topic YOU find interesting. I luckily get to research something very up and coming, something that almost no one have research before me. ⠀ In October 2018, Canada legalized recreational cannabis, being the first large federal state to do so. The research gap was so clear that I simply had to write a thesis on Cannabis Tourism. ⠀ I have been able to witness the growth of the cannabis tourism industry from its inital stages, discovered its challenges and opportunities and reflected upon this very liberal economic sector. ⠀ I even participated as a researcher in emergent Cannabis Tourism Experiences. To my surprise they are rich in history and culture, and include anything from local food markets to virtual reality games and flower festivals.
Next in #TheEMTMsummer series, Paula shares her work on her tourism consultancy company and related projects: ”Hey there, from sunny and welcoming Spain! I have been using this (very hot) summer to restructure my tourism consultancy company and develop some projects, such as a knowledge-sharing platform for the tourism industry. Aiming to bridge the gap between academia and the market for Brazilian tourism professionals, I manage a team of tourism experts through the creation of digital content available through various online platforms. I know what you’ll say: another digital nomad, right? But, well, that's exactly what it is. After all, working in coffee shops, building networks as well as taking some online courses have been a challenge (believe me, it is!), but I have also taken it as an opportunity to develop as an entrepreneur. If you want to know more information or to contribute with us, just let me know! @paulanmarchesan “. . #EMTM #EMTMers #EMTMlife #EMTM1820 #Erasmus #ErasmusMundus #summer #tourism #consultancy #Brazil #entrepreneur #Spain
#TheEMTMsummer is back again, with Dominic from generation 2018-20 sharing what he’s doing for this summer: “Greetings from Ljubljana! This summer, I am a digital nomad interning for the Alliance of Innovators and Researchers in Tourism and Hospitality (AIRTH), a global network of innovation-minded scholars and practitioners who share the common goal of developing and implementing innovations that contribute to the sustainable development of destinations and tourism and hospitality businesses. I have three primary roles within the organization: 1. to conduct research and draft business case studies to be included in the AIRTH Encyclopedia of Innovation; 2. to compile a database of awards worldwide for innovations in tourism and hospitality; and 3. to promote AIRTH on social media through weekly posts on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. My collaboration with AIRTH contributing members has afforded me the privilege of connecting with tourism academics around the world, and my research has enabled me to stay up to date with the most recent innovative developments in the tourism and hospitality industry.” To find out more about AIRTH and the innovative side of tourism, go to www.airth.global. #EMTM #EMTMers #EMTMlife #EMTM1820 #Erasmus #ErasmusMundus #summer #tourism
Let’s go to Mexico with @evaklas.nomadlife and her #EMTMThesisDiary “I guess we all have this one place that we somehow feel like we "need to" live in for a while at some point. For me, this place was Mexico. So when I got the chance to do an internship and write my thesis there, I took it. Now here I am, looking back on 4.5 months in this country I have been fascinated by for so many years. I finished my internship with a local tour operator specialized in responsible tourism last week. It gave me a lot of practical insights, that I am now trying to translate into my thesis on innovation in responsible tourism. It has been and still is a challenging, but rewarding process that teaches me a lot. I still feel like I "need to" be in Mexico, so I still am and I am enjoying every day in this beautiful country”
#TheEMTMThesisDiary from @ajdazor generation 2017-19: “Hola from Tenerife 🇮🇨 (yes, I’m here again 😉)! ⠀ This time I am doing a case-study and gathering data for my master thesis on practicing sustainable tourism in marine conservation. I am volunteering at the Atlantic Whale and Dolphin Foundation (@awdfoundation) that runs cetacean educational awareness, research and conservation programmes on the island - one of the largest whale watching centres in the world. 🐳🐬 ⠀ I act as a “research guide” on whale watching boats, working with the tourism industry in Tenerife, raising awareness about cetacean conservation and promoting responsible whale watching and other eco-tourism opportunities on the island. ⠀ So now let me conclude with this encouraging quote: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” - don’t close your eyes, instead do something and encourage others to do so, as if everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot. And remember, at the end we can make a great difference! 🌍💙 P.S. I never thought I would see whales and dolphins every day.” #EMTM #EMTMer #emtmlife #EMTM1719 #MasterThesis #erasmusmundus #tourismmanagement #Tenerife #volunteer #volunteeringabroad #sustainabletourism #marineconservation #savetheocean #stopplasticpollution #raiseawareness
#TheEMTMThesisDiary is back from Carolina @caroaldao Generation 2017-19! ⠀ “Hello from the North Pole, at 78 degrees north! In the land of polar bears, huskies, snow mobiles, avalanches, crevasses, polar nights and northern lights, I made this destination the topic of my thesis. ⠀ Dressed head to toe in a Himalayan suit, I reached the northernmost town in the world: Longyearbyen, in Svalbard where temperatures hit -30º C. ⠀ My aim? To study the travel motivations to visit this place, and to attend a course at the University Centre in Svalbard related to the Stormy Sun and the Northern Lights.” ⠀ The beauty of EMTM is that you can choose any destination to research in the 4th semester, anything to follow your passion 🌟
