If a maple tree is an “it” we pick up a chainsaw. If the maple tree is a “her”, we think twice. It is very interesting how our language can affect our relationship to the world around us. Our language refers only to humans as beings and all else as objects. Animals, rivers, rocks and land are all strangely referred to as “it”. Making them into objects we can “own”, sell, and harm without thought. I much prefer to see every part of the world around me as a living being that I have a relationship with. They are my family and are just as alive as I am.
